With an estimated population growth of 2 billion the next 30 years, the demand for animal protein will increase by 52 percent.

Wild fish have been exploited for generations, and estimates suggest that the annual catch of edible marine protein has already passed its peak the way we harvest the world`s resources today. Responsible and sustainable fishery with utilization of the biomass will be crucial going forward. The oceans cannot naturally provide the growing demand for seafood. Aquaculture is the tool to fill in the gap of seafood supply.

– THE WORLD VIEW

In ‘The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture’, FAO 2018 the UN Food and Agriculture Organization tells us that aquaculture is growing fast and is forecast to produce 60 % of all fish for human consumption by 2030 – 37 % more that at present.

FAO identifies aquaculture as a leaner and much more sustainable, environmentally-friendly method of producing food for the world’s rapidly increasing population. It is an enormously efficient method of producing highly nutritious food that contains unique quantities of proteins and ingredients that are key to human health. Meat products cannot compete, because the food conversion ratio (FCR) of aquaculture products is far in excess of traditional animal farming on land. 

We can look at the excellent example of farmed salmon – an extensive and important industry here in Norway – to demonstrate this.
